The Elf on the Shelf – Night 1

Meet Zoe! The creepy new addition to our holiday family. (Named after Zooey Deschanel who played the girl elf in the movie Elf – we just watched the Elf DVD last night and our daughter loves the movie).

I have never been a big fan of the Elf on the Shelf as I think it’s a little creepy looking but…I have broken down and purchased one for my daughter. In previous years she never mentioned anything about the Elf on the Shelf or wanting one but this year she is in kindergarten and all of the kids are talking about the elves that visit them every day to keep an eye on their behavior and report it back to Santa every night.

Apparently the kindergarten kids are viewing the Elf on the Shelf as a real entity, just as real as Santa Claus. I did not want to tell my daughter that the Elf on the Shelf is not real for two reasons. One, I don’t want her to go to school and tell all of her friend that the Elf on the Shelf is not real. Two, I don’t want my daughter to think about how all of the other kids think it is real and hear me tell her that it’s not then make a connection with Santa Claus and start questioning whether or not he is real. She is only 5 so she still has a few good years of believing in Santa Claus ahead of her. I am nowhere near ready for that to end. So I found myself looking at Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Hallmark, and finally found a girl Elf on the Shelf at Target.

Since we’re already a few days into December I figured it would be best to have our Elf make his first appearance each year on the night that we get our Christmas tree. Just this morning we cut down our tree at the Jarrettsville Nurseries’ Christmas Tree Farm, we listened to our little one sing in a Christmas concert in the park for the gazebo lighting, we had family over for dinner, and finally…we decorated the Christmas tree. After the little elf loving girl was fast asleep all snug in her bed, I propped the Elf on the Shelf on a high branch of the Christmas tree and placed the book on her nearby children’s art table for her to find the next morning.

Edit 12/8/13 –

Nik came down to find the Elf on the Shelf book on her art table and without even reading it she went in search right away. She couldn’t find it so we read the book and as I was reading she suddenly SHRIEKED! She had spotted the elf over my shoulder in the tree. 🙂

Now…what to do with her tonight…
